Fly agaric(Ophrys insectifera) belongs to the family of orchids and reaches a height of 15 - 40 cm.
It is an amazing plant because its two to 20 velvety reddish-brown flowers with a bluish spot on the lip, not only resemble an insect at first sight for humans, but also give this impression to the males of certain hymenoptera (e.g.: digger wasps). These insect males fly to the flower and try to mate with the lower lip. In this way they transfer pollen packets from previous attempts to other flowers of the species. The fly agaric colonizes dry grasslands, shrublands and forests. It loves calcareous, nitrogen-salt-poor soils. In the Tyrolean Lech Nature Park it can be found in the dry floodplain forest and is one of the fully protected plant species according to the Tyrolean Nature Conservation Ordinance 2006.
