Woodpeckers count through their attractive appearance are among the most attractive forest dwellers. With their distinctive drum roll and their Work tracks (pecking and building activity) on the trees, they are recognisable to observers. The Tiroler Lech Nature Park is home to several protected woodpecker species.

Both for the Three-toed Woodpecker, as well as for the Black Woodpecker and the Grey Woodpecker they are listed in Annex I of the Birds Directive (Directive 2009/147/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 November 2009 on the conservation of wild birds).
