Fly agaric

The Fly agaric (Ophrys insectifera) belongs to the family of Orchids and reaches a height of 15 - 40 cm.
It is an amazing plant because its two to 20 velvety reddish-brown flowers with a bluish spot on the lip not only resemble an insect for humans at first glance, but also give this impression to the males of certain hymenoptera (e.g. digger wasps). These male insects fly to the flower and try to mate with the lower lip. In this way they transfer pollen packets from previous attempts to other flowers of the species. The fly agaric colonises dry grassland, scrub and woodland. It loves lime-rich, low-nitrogen soils. In the Tiroler Lech Nature Park, it can be found in the dry riparian forest and is a fully protected plant species according to the Tyrolean Nature Conservation Ordinance 2006.
