Wetterstein Limestone

The Wetterstein limestone is a hard rock with a high lime content. It emerged approximately 230 million years ago under tropical conditions in the Tethys Ocean.

In shallower parts of the sea reefs grew. Wetterstein limestone emerged from these white, bright reefs, which can include polished pieces of coral. Wetterstein limestone creates massive, smooth rock faces with few gravel slopes.

The Karwendel mountains, the Zugspitze mountain, the Tannheim Mountains, the Säuling summit and the 10km-long Heiterwand face north-east of the Hahntenjoch and are made from this stone.
